Early Life
Dennis Keith Rodman’s parents are Shirley and Philander Rodman, Jr. His dad used to be in the Air Force and even fought in the Vietnam War. When he was little, his dad left the family and went to live in the Philippines.
Rodman‘s childhood wasn’t very happy, and he was quiet and shy when he was young. He went to South Oak Cliff High School and was taught by a future basketball coach named Gary Blair. After finishing high school, he got a job working as a night concierge at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport.
Then, something interesting happened: he suddenly grew a lot taller, from being 5 feet 11 inches (1.80 meters) to 6 feet 7 inches (2.01 meters). Because of this growth, he decided to give basketball another try.
Career
Rodman played basketball with the Detroit Pistons from 1986 to 1993. The Pistons were known for their strong defense and rough playing style. He won the NBA championship with the Pistons in 1989 and 1990.
In 1993, Rodman joined the San Antonio Spurs, and then in the 1995/96 season, he played for the famous Chicago Bulls team led by Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen. With Rodman’s help, the Bulls achieved something historic. They became the first team to win over 70 games in a regular season and went on to win the championship. They held the record for the most wins in a season until the Golden State Warriors broke it in 2015-16. The Bulls defended their championship in the following years as well.
Rodman was known as the best rebounder in the league. He played a big role in the Bulls’ success due to his excellent defense and determination. He won the rebounding championship seven times and averaged 13.1 rebounds per game in his career. After Michael Jordan retired, Rodman tried to continue playing in the NBA, including with the Los Angeles Lakers, but he eventually retired after a last attempt with the Dallas Mavericks in 2000.
Between 1997 and 1999, Rodman appeared in the wrestling league WCW (World Championship Wrestling). He joined a group led by “Hollywood” Hulk Hogan called nWo, which brought a lot of attention and viewership to the league. He even won a championship belt in a celebrity wrestling event in 2008.
Rodman had several marriages. He married Annie Bakes in 1992, but they divorced in 1993. He then married actress Carmen Electra in 1998, but that marriage lasted only until 1999. His third marriage was with Michelle Moyer from 2003 to 2012, and they have two children together.
In 2011, Rodman was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. His jersey number 10 with the Pistons was retired as a tribute to him in 2011 as well.
North Korea Visits
In late February 2013, Dennis Rodman went to North Korea. During this visit, he met the country’s leader, Kim Jong-un, and he even called him a “friend for life.” However, some people criticized Rodman for not handling the situation responsibly, considering the tense relationship between North Korea and other countries. In the same year, he went to North Korea again to visit Kim Jong-un for the second time.
These trips were supported by an Irish betting company Paddy Power, the media outlet Vice, and the television channel HBO.
Rodman went to North Korea for the fifth time in June 2017, and this trip might have had diplomatic intentions. It was funded by PotCoin, a company that provides services for a cryptocurrency used by legal cannabis businesses.
