He was part of a group La Quinta del Buitre, which included Manolo Sanchís, Rafael Martín Vázquez, Míchel, and Miguel Pardeza.
During his 12 seasons with the main club, Butragueño scored 123 goals in La Liga, playing in 341 games. He also represented the Spain national team in two World Cups and two European Championships. In the 1986 World Cup, he was the second-highest scorer. He scored a total of 26 goals for his country, setting a record that lasted for several years.
