Early Life
Mike Tyson grew up in a poor area of New York Brooklyn. He was the youngest of three kids in his family. His dad left when he was just two years old, so he didn’t really know his father. Until he was ten, Tyson and his family lived in a place Bedford-Stuyvesant, which was one of the poorest parts of New York.
Even though Tyson started doing bad things when he was young, like stealing and robbing, nobody could have guessed he would become a tough boxer. When he was a kid, he was quiet and didn’t hang out much with others. People thought he was weak, and he spent a lot of time breeding pigeons, which he really enjoyed.
By the time he was 12, Tyson had been arrested by the police 38 times for different things he did wrong. Eventually, he went to a special school in Catskill, New York, for kids who were having a hard time. His gym teacher there, Bobby Stewart, used to be a boxer, and he saw that Tyson was really strong.
At first, Stewart said no when Tyson asked to learn boxing, but Tyson worked hard in school, so Stewart agreed and started teaching him how to box. Then, he introduced Tyson to a coach named Cus D’Amato. After seeing Tyson spar (practice fighting) when he was just 13 years old, D’Amato got really excited and said, “This kid will become the future heavyweight champion of the world.”
Career
Mike Tyson started his career in 1981. He was a young boxer and won gold medals in the Junior Olympics in 1981 and 1982.
When he turned 18 on March 6, 1985, he had his first professional match in Albany, New York. He fought against Hector Mercedes and won by knocking him out in the first round.
On November 22, 1986, Tyson had his first big fight for the World Boxing Council (WBC) heavyweight championship. He defeated Trevor Berbick to become the champion.
In 1988, Tyson had three fights. He faced Larry Holmes on January 22, 1988, and knocked out the famous former champion in the fourth round.
In 1991, Tyson was arrested for the rape of a young woman Desiree Washington. This happened in a hotel room in Indianapolis.
After being released from prison in 1995, Tyson made a comeback in boxing. He won back titles, including the WBA title.
In March 1996, Tyson easily won the WBC title from Frank Bruno, becoming one of the few boxers in history to regain a heavyweight championship after losing it.
In 1997, Tyson had a rematch with Evander Holyfield. However, Tyson was disqualified for biting Holyfield’s ear, causing serious injury. In 2000, Tyson had three fights. In January, he fought Julius Francis in England and won by knocking him out in the second round.
In 2002, Tyson fought for the world heavyweight title against Lennox Lewis and lost by knockout. Then in 2003, he defeated Clifford Etienne in just 49 seconds of the first round.
In August 2013, Tyson formed a boxing promotion company Iron Mike Productions in partnership with Acquinity Sports.
In July 2020, Tyson announced that he signed a contract to have an exhibition bout with former champion Roy Jones Jr. The fight was originally planned for a certain date, but it was later moved to November 28 for better earnings. The fight lasted 8 rounds and ended in a draw.
