He did more than just play basketball – he also acted in movies and tried rapping.

During his 19-year career, he won the NBA championship four times and was chosen for the All-Star game 15 times. He even got a special award called Most Valuable Player (MVP) once, and he was the leading scorer in the league twice. In 2016, he got a big honor by being put into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

Shaquille O’Neal’s money and possessions are thought to be worth about $450 Million.

Early Life

Shaquille Rashaun O’Neal’s parents are Lucille O’Neal and Joe Toney. Joe Toney played basketball in high school and got a scholarship offer to play at Seton.

When Shaquille was 16 years old, he was already very tall, about 6 feet 10 inches (around 2.08 meters). He started playing basketball at Robert G. Cole High School. During his time there, his team did really well, with a record of 68 wins and only 1 loss in two years. They even won the state championship when he was a senior.

After finishing high school, Shaquille went to Louisiana State University (LSU) and studied business.

Even though he left LSU early to start playing in the NBA, he still continued learning even while he was a professional basketball player. He was also honored by being put into the LSU Hall of Fame.

Career

Shaquille O’Neal started his basketball career in 1992 when he was picked as the first overall player by the Orlando Magic in the NBA Draft.

He quickly became one of the best centers in the league. He won the Rookie of the Year award in 1992-93 and led his team to the NBA Finals in 1995.

In 1996, there was a situation where O’Neal had a little clash with Dennis Rodman from the Chicago Bulls. Other Bulls players like Scottie Pippen and Michael Jordan stepped in to stop any further problems.

In 1999, before the 1999-2000 season, the Los Angeles Lakers hired Phil Jackson as their head coach, and the team’s luck changed for the better.

After playing for the Orlando Magic for four years, O’Neal joined the Los Angeles Lakers as a free agent. They went on to win three championships in a row in 2000, 2001, and 2002.

Because of some issues between O’Neal and Kobe Bryant, O’Neal was traded to the Miami Heat in 2004. He then won his fourth NBA championship with them in 2006.

During the 2006 NBA playoffs, the Miami Heat went up against the Chicago Bulls. In the first game, O’Neal had a great performance with 27 points, 16 rebounds, and 5 blocks. He continued to play well in the second game, helping Miami take a 2-0 series lead.

In the middle of the 2007-2008 season, O’Neal was traded to the Phoenix Suns. After about a season and a half with them, he was traded again, this time to the Cleveland Cavaliers during the 2009-10 season.

He played one more season for the Boston Celtics in 2010-11 before retiring. O’Neal announced his retirement on June 1, 2011, through a video he posted on Twitter. He had missed a lot of games because of injuries.

After Retirement

In the summer of 2011, there were claims during a trial that a gang member said Shaq had ordered three murders, an NBA player’s injury, and a kidnapping. However, the court later dropped these charges in August because they had serious doubts about the credibility of a key witness named Robert Ross, who used to know O’Neal.

Starting from July 2011, Shaq began working as an expert on TV for the US network TNT and the NBA. He shares his thoughts on current things happening in and around the NBA through a blog.

In April 2013, the Los Angeles Lakers did something special to honor him. They stopped using his jersey number and hung up a big jersey with his name and number in their hall along with other retired jerseys.

On September 10, 2016, O’Neal was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, along with Yao Ming and Allen Iverson. A bit later, on December 22, 2016, the Miami Heat also retired his jersey number 32 during a game break against the LA Lakers.

They had already said on February 26, 2016, that they wouldn’t give out the number 32 to anyone else in the future. This is a special thing because only 32 American athletes have had their jersey numbers retired by more than one team.
